This beautiful hardcover book
contains the test results of a long series of experiments whose aim was
to discover the ideal measurable proportions for an oboe reed.
The book also contains many photos of reed-making tools, a short
introduction to the history of reed production for musical instruments,
and an account of visits to the cane suppliers Alliaud, Rigotti, Madame
Ghys and Marca in the Var region of France.
Description:
“Every oboist is engaged in a lifelong search for a better reed, but the
results printed here may help to provide a golden mean while one is
learning the actual craft and art of playing the oboe.”
The book "Better Oboe Reeds" is the result of a long series of
experiments whose aim was to discover the ideal measurable proportions
for an oboe reed. These include such factors as the diameter and hardness
of the cane, its ideal thickness and profile after gouging, its shape,
and finally, the interaction between these various parameters.
After having investigated these factors in a large number of reeds, I
chose 25 in which the variations were very slight, and which I believed
must contain the ideal dimensions.
These chosen reeds were then tested by Henrik Goldschmidt and Bjørn Carl
Nielsen in Copenhagen, Jean-Louis Capezzali and Jean-Christophe Gayot in
Paris, and Hansjörg Schellenberger in Berlin. The reeds were numbered,
with only I knowing the data of each individual reed.
The test subjects were in broad agreement as to the reeds high quality,
and the small variations between the reeds were assessed by way of marks
given for tone, intonation, flexibility, dynamics, etc.
